Te Unga Mai Programme 2009.
Te Putake is a place-based education programme combining heritage, culture and outdoor education to create unique experiential learning opportunities. Students enjoyed a range of exciting hands on activities that drew on the history and the land scape of the Tairawhiti.

27th of August was an evening presentation to the Community.
The first three days explored the first encounters between tangata whenua and Europeans in Turanganui a Kiwa.
It was based at the yacht club using Kaiti beach and Kaiti hill.
Some of the activities involved:
Nga Wai E Rua: experienced paddlers led an excursion on the local rivers. Students learnt basic waka ama skills as well as information about the rivers, their names and history. Starting and finishing at the Marina, groups paddled on the Taruhera, Waimata and Turanganui Rivers.
The Tyranganui quest: this quest was a group activity involving problem solving and team building. Small supervised teams walked from the yacht club to visit a number of sites around Kaiti Beach and Titirangi, exploring the events that occured during the first encounters between tanagata whenua and Cook's crew in 1769.
