What are the learning goals of the Literature Circles? To experience the fun of reading as a recreational activity.
To read one or more longer novels and broaden our understanding of the text through discussions with others.
To bring our own experiences and ideas to discussions.
To accept, discuss and question respectfully the ideas of others.
To modify or develop our own understanding through listening to others.
To broaden our range of vocabulary through discussing with others and seeing words used in different contexts. What does each student need to do to achieve these goals? To keep up with the reading that the group has negotiated.
To keep a learning journal.
To take on a role in the group and work positively with others.
How are the Literature Circles organised? Groups set up with at least 4 students in a group.
Students from different schools are put into each group.
Roles are given for each member of the group eg:discussion leader, vocabulary finder, connector, literary luminary and checker.
This year we have two Literature Circle clusters based at Awapuni and Central School.
