Welcome to the G.A.T.E Leadership Programme for 2008

The G.A.T.E Leadership Programme is for students from our cluster schools to meet together to develop leadership skills to take back to their school and use.

The programme involves working together to develop co-operation skills, working as a team, sharing knowledge and ideas about leadership and selecting a school based problem to get involved in as a leader. The programme was based at Riverdale School and involves 18 students. The programme is lots of fun because it involves lots of practical activities.

I interviewed two of the students who attended the course from Central School - Ben and Louisa.

1. What is Leadership all about?

Ben - The Leadership program is all about being a leader and being responsible, also finding a problem in your school and solving it!

2. How many people are doing this course?

Louisa - 18 kids from 7 schools - Central, Riverdale, Motu, Makaraka, Mangapapa, Ormond, Awapuni and Manutuke.

3. What leaders have come to talk to you?

Ben - We have been to see developing leaders of the community who have been mentored by local leader Derek Lardelli.

4. What types of things did you do on the course?

Ben and Louisa - We have been to Kaiti Hill for roleplaying Leadership activities, the Olympic Pools, the Tairawhiti Museum to find out all about local leaders and the art school at the Polytech.

5. Do you think the course will help you become a leader in the future?

Ben - Yes, we have learnt many valuable skills at this programme.

Louisa - Yes, because it is a good opportunity to help me and other students to learn how to be a leader.

6. Why do you think it has helped you?

Ben - I think it has helped me become a better leader and I have learnt better communication skills which has helped me earn the role of captain of the Central School Weka Ball team.

Louisa - It has helped me learn new skills that I can pass on to other people.

7. What has been the best part/parts for you?

Ben - Going to the Olympic Pools.

Louisa - Going to Kaiti Hill for roleplaying.
